Why lambs need jacketing
Hypothermia can suppress a newborn lamb's suckling instinct, reducing colostrum intake, which weakens the lamb and can lead to rejection by the ewe — especially with multiple births. By 5 hours old, a lamb has used most of the brown fat she's born with, and needs more energy to survive in the cold.
Early identification of hypothermia is key to survival — it causes around 30% of lamb losses, many of which are avoidable with early action.
